You CAN help your child become a good reader!
From ERS FOCUS ON Teaching and Testing Early Reading
Tips for Parents Supporting Their Children in Early Reading
1. Look for print such as books, magazines, newspapers that relate to your child's interests.
2. Look for opportunities to read every day. Examples: recipes, menus, T.V Listings, sports statistics
3. Point our words in your child's daily life: Examples: cereal boxes, toys, traffic signs
4. Sing songs! Read short poems or nursery rhymes. Play rhyming games.
5. Point to words on the page as you read aloud to your child.
6. Re-read a favorite part several times until your child can read it with you.
7. Encourage younger and older kids to read together.
8. Encourage your child to write! Grocery lists, wish lists, favorite things
9. Model for your child how each family uses reading to be successful in their day or job.
10. Make books available while riding in a car or waiting at the doctor's office.
11. It's okay if a child wants to re-read favorite books or stories over and over again. This builds
confidence and fluency!
